Preparation

Step 1: Measure and cut out your pieces: two 5/6oz veg-tanned panels (13" x 14") for the front and back cover pieces, two pieces of 3/4oz Crazy Horse leather measuring 13" x 3", and one piece measuring 13" x 4".

Step 2: Use the corner punch to trim the outside edges of the front and back covers, the outside corners of the 13" x 3" pieces, and all four corners of the 13" x 4" piece.

Step 3: Bevel the edges of the veg-tanned pieces and use your groover around the perimeter.

Tooling

Step 4: Wet your leather, and when it's ready, transfer your artwork onto the leather with a stylus or pen.

Step 5: Cut and tool your artwork, working through the following stamps in order:

1. B200 Craftool® Stamp Beveler Smooth anywhere where rose petals overlap
2. B803 Craftool® Stamp Beveler Checked remaining unbeveled lines
3. A99 Craftool® Stamp eyes and nostrils of skull
4. M885 Craftool® Stamp interior of spade and outside of the roses
5. V821 Craftool® Stamp edges of veiner on rose leaves
6. P703 Craftool® Stamp Add details on rose petals
7. E294 Craftool® Stamp Abstract Matting (Use remaining stamps to fill the interior of the roses surrounding dice, cards, and skull.)
8. Add any decorative cuts with your swivel knife now

Assembly

Step 6: On the two 13" x 3" Crazy Horse leather pieces, mark two holes for the mounting bolts centered at 2 1/4" in from the top and bottom. Punch holes where you marked.

Step 7: Similarly, mark holes on the 13" x 4" piece — 2 1/4" from the top and bottom, and a half inch in from the sides on both sides. On one side, punch with your 1/4" round punch; on the other side, use your 1" long punch.

Step 8: Use mounting tape or glue to secure the 13" x 3" pieces to the covers on the end without the trimmed corners.

Step 9: Stitch the Crazy Horse leather gusset to the front cover. Repeat for the back cover.

Step 10: Assemble the album with the Chicago screws, and you're good to go!

The majority of my work is handmade items. I love what I do because in addition to drawing and tooling the artwork, I get to create the entire piece from scratch and flex some technical design in conceiving and creating all the details to maximize functionality. The style of tooling I gravitate towards is what I call "meat and potato's", using a small selection of tools for a bold, high impact product. Nothings overdone, which helps build a cohesive scene among all the elements and translates to a simple but strong scene.
